On July 23, we left Pearland. Our first night was at Lafayette, KOA. After the rain stopped, it was lovely! While we were there, we drove down in the car to New Iberia, visiting the Jungle Gardens and the Tabasco Factory.
While we were at Jungle Gardens, we saw alligators!
On 7/25, we made the short drive to New Orleans. We stayed at the French Quarter RV Park which was an easy walk away from the French Quarter.
We took an airboat tour of the area, and we saw many alligators!
We were in New Orleans for 4 days. Here are some more shots from the city.
We like visiting historically interesting places, like Fort Gaines near Mobile, AL. We were in Mobile on 7/29-30.
We visited Montgomery, Alabama and took pics of the capitol! We had gotten to town on a Sunday, so we took these pics. The following day, we were set to leave, so we got up early, headed back and got pics of the inside before we unhooked to head out. See all of our Alabama Capitol pics here.
Our next stop was at the first of August — Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, Alabama. What a pretty park! We went on some hikes there with Jodie. This was the first stop on this whole trip so far when we were not absolutely miserable with the heat. Monte Sano was clear, cool, fresh, and wonderful.
Stone Mountain, Georgia was next! We stayed at the park for 2 full days, did some hiking, and took a walk up the granite rock!
On 8/9, we drove on to Charleston, SC. Our usual favorite spot to park was full, so we tried out the KOA. And we loved it!
This is where we had the adventure of flooding our campsite! We had a clog in our drain vent and Jack was running water into the tanks. Well, we didn’t realize it till our neighbor came over, but we had water coming out through our roof! It took a few minutes to figure out that he’d forgotten to shut off the water to the black water flush. The clean water was running out of our vent pipe!
Myrtle Beach! We were here with a goal in mind: to watch our great-niece Kayleigh playing in the All-Star Softball Tournament! It was really, really hot in Myrtle Beach, but we had several days there, so we made the most of it.
We got to see a live streaming of grandson Matthew receiving his white coat at University of Iowa Med School.
We did some nice walks — to the beach, around our lovely camp, and around the neighborhood.
We also had the most expensive seafood buffet ever. It was ok, but not great, and it was over $100 for just 2 of us.
And we got to spend a bit of time with Annette, Lisa, Kayleigh, Brayden, and Molly.
The 18th and 19th of August found us in Wytheville, Virginia. (It’s pronounced WITH-ville.) We walked around the neat downtown and we had dinner at an old log cabin that had been converted into a fine restaurant and a gift shop.
Then we made the short drive to Milton, West Virginia. We were there to visit the capitol at Charleston. But, as frequently happens, we discovered coolness in Milton!
Blenko Glass is made there and they give great tours. And everyone we know has a piece of Blenko glass or have been on their tour. But it was all new to us. 🙂
And there’s more to come! Follow along with us in Part 3!
