Realistic metal textures have long been an exciting challenge for the Photoshop artist. For this tutorial, we&#8217;ll make an oily, scratched metal plate. If you want a newer plate, stop sooner than I do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">I&#8217;m beginning with an image size of 1000 x 1000. You can use any size you wish, but be sure to view it at the size you&#8217;ll be saving it, so that you&#8217;ll be able to see your effects accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Create a New Layer by clicking the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette. Fill this with a light gray. I like Alt-Backspace for this.<br><br>Now make some noise! &#x1f61b; Filter &gt; Noise &gt; Add Noise. Filter &gt; Blur &gt; Motion Blur. I used 90\u00b0 and a distance of 43. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"445\" height=\"498\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/myjanee.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/metal4.png?resize=445%2C498&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/myjanee.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/metal4.png?w=445&amp;ssl=1 445w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/myjanee.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/metal4.png?resize=268%2C300&amp;ssl=1 268w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want a crosshatch press pattern, follow this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Duplicate the layer by dragging to the New Layer Icon. <br>Rotate the Layer 90\u00b0 with Edit &gt; Transform &gt; Rotate. <br>Now put this Layer into Multiply Blending Mode at the top of the Layers Palette. (See image above right.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">This is a clipping of my metal at this point. It&#8217;s a bit too perfect for my needs, though. I want it oily and scratched. <br><br>This is one of those (many) times when you can let your creativity go a little mad. By doing this, you can change opacity to lessen an effect, erase, or just start over. <br><br>Oh, and do save your file. To the left is how my metal looks after applying some brush stroked scratches, a bit of eraser, and a little smudge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Oil! Let&#8217;s just paint some on. Oil will let the texture of the metal show through, so make a new layer and put it into Multiply Blending Mode. Reduce the opacity of this layer to about 25%. I used a round very soft brush with Flow of 45% for my effect.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"499\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/myjanee.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/metal7.png?resize=580%2C499&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/myjanee.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/metal7.png?w=646&amp;ssl=1 646w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/myjanee.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/metal7.png?resize=300%2C258&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of the Motion Blur we used in the beginning, you will want to crop away the edges of your metal.
