Trip 2 — Colorado Adventures – Part 1 — Part 2
So we left our heroine and her hero in Vernal, Utah, and they are still there, exploring more and more wonderful sites. On 9/8/18, we went off exploring. We found a faint sign saying “Moonshine Arch” and we were on it!
The trail was poorly marked and we took a couple of wrong turns, but we did make it to the arch. We were hoping to find a snack bar there, but, alas. None was to be found.
Next, we headed up to Dry Fork Canyon to the McConkie Ranch. Petroglyphs abound! And pictographs. And they are beautiful.
The following day, 9/9, we took off again in our car and went to Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. There is lots to do in this area — recreation and such — but we were into the scenic drive and taking pictures! Here are a few of mine.
In Vernal, there is a great Dinosaur Museum! We went there on the 10th.
Fantasy Canyon! We had never heard of it either. But the woman in the campground told us it was a “must-do” if we had time. And we did!
It was sort of creepy, because we were the only people around. Well, that and the formations were weird!
On the 11th, we moved camp, staying in Grand Junction, Colorado, near Colorado National Monument. We visited the Monument on the 12th.
On 9/13, we dropped camp in Montrose, Colorado. From there, we drove the car over to Telluride. On the way there, a man had a flat tire, so we stopped and Jack changed it for him.
In gratitude, the man gave us a card and told us to go up to the top of the mountain in the ski lift. There, we would find Allred’s, which is his restaurant. He said, “Get whatever you want; I’ll take care of it.”
So we did! Our dinner was delicious, service was impeccable, and I do hope that we get a chance to return! And the ski lift ride up was free!
Then we walked around Telluride in search of ice cream. I love these signs.
The following day, we went to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This is one of those National Parks that’s incredible, but yet nobody visits.
The following day, we returned and visited the “down” side of the park.
On our way back to Montrose, we spied the Museum of the West. Why not? The only downside of this museum is that they don’t let anyone visit without a tour guide. And these guides talk endlessly. But I do like these pics I took.
By the 18th, we were encamped at Durango, Colorado. We boarded the Durango and Silverton train and off we went. This was a bucket list thing for Jack, and we both loved this day.
When we arrived in Silverton, there was little time to eat, but we did find a place and even had time to nose around in some shops before we needed to be back on our train.
And then we went home! Thanks for coming along with us on this journey!
